Wow - it was a busy but fun last full week of Kindergarten! The children: - completed their butterfly observation books and took them home today. Please have your child read his/her book to you. - wrote a special message for Amelia and Oakley's Star Student books - had a lot of fun participating in Sports Day on Tuesday. A huge thank you to the Gr. 8 Leadership students for planning and running a very fun day for the K-6 students. - talked and wrote about their favorite Kindergarten memories - learned the meaning of "Indigenous Peoples' Day" and participated with their Gr. 4 buddies in two traditional Indigenous games - a lacrosse relay and "blanket tossing" (we used a parachute) in which the students had to try to toss stuffed animals placed on the parachute as high as they could. - learned what peace poles are and created their own peace pole. Peace poles are located all around the world to send the message, "Let peace prevail on earth". - listened and viewed a story about an Indigenous boy and how he received his name called, "Thunder Boy Jr." - said thank-you and farewell to their Grade 4 buddies Only two days of Kindergarten left!! Please remember to have your child bring a large bag with handles to take home all of his/her work. Please return all home reading and library books. There are still several students with unreturned library books. I look forward to seeing all of you at the Kindergarten celebration on Tuesday, June 25 @ 10:45 in the gym. Thank you very much for a wonderful year! I feel truly blessed to have had the opportunity to work with you and your child! We had a fabulous trip to Butterfield Acres today! The weather cooperated and was perfect! The children milked a goat, fed the goats, visited the pigs, rabbits, horses, sheep, calves, ducks, emus, turkeys, peacocks and got to go on a tractor/wagon ride. Once again, thank you very much to all of the volunteers that assisted to make the trip possible! Also this week at school the children: - built a 3D shape that they will be sharing with you on the weekend - learned about Imani's and Amelia's favorite things and wrote a special message for their Star Student books - the word of the week was "have". Please have your child keep reading everyday and practicing the sight words over the summer! - we released our butterflies yesterday. The children were very interested and engaged in observing the life cycle of the butterflies. We were very sad to say goodbye to them but we understand that they have to continue on the cycle of life! Have a fabulous weekend and a very Happy Father's Day Dads!! Reminders and Important Dates: Please send a large bag, preferably a reusable type with handles, labelled with your child's name, for your child to bring his/her belongings home on June 24. All Library Books due for Inventory - please have a look around your house for library books and home reading books and return ASAP June 18 - Elementary Sports Day 9:30 - 11:50. There will be a Canada Day theme with teams divided up into provinces and territories - please have your child dress for the weather and wear red and/or white. Our grade 8 leadership students will be leading each activity. Parents are welcome to come partake in the fun. We are teaming up with Family Freezed Popsicle Truck again this year! Please send in $4 to your child's teacher if you have not already done so, if your child would like to have a popsicle as part of our rest and refreshment station. After the festivities, around 11:30 am, there will be various child-friendly food and beverage trucks for a big Rideau Park Picnic. Prices range from $5-$10 per item for hot dogs, hamburgers, quesadillas, fries, cookie dough, lemonade and more. Kindergarten students and families are welcome to attend. Kindergarten students must be accompanied by a parent/s and/or caregiver at the picnic! Hope to see you there! Amy will be sending out more information next week. Releasing Our Butterflies and Butterfield Acres Wow - I can't believe we're in our last month of Kindergarten. This week at school the children:
- reviewed identifying and describing 3D shapes - the students will be creating a 3D object next week - illustrated and wrote about our caterpillars - they were all in their chrysalis stage on Monday and today our first butterfly emerged. The children have been very interested and engaged observing the life cycle of butterflies! - the word of the week was "come". Please keep up with the home reading! - practiced addition sills - learned about Aanya's favorite hobbies and wrote a special message for Aanya's Star Student Book. Next week we will have two star students - Amelia and Imani! My sincere apologies and gratitude to all of the parent volunteers that came prepared to go. Fortunately, I was able to reschedule the trip for June 14, so fingers crossed that the will weather cooperate with us!
This week at school the children: - wrote about and drew their observations of our caterpillars in their butterfly observation books. One of our caterpillars formed it's chrysalis today! I expect when we return to school on Monday most of our caterpillars will be in their pupa stage. The children have been very interested and excited observing them and seeing how fast and how big they have grown in just a week. The children have also been fortunate to observe the grade 2's baby chicks, which hatched this week. - practiced solving addition and subtraction equations to 10. Try to have your child practice his/her problem solving skills with every day questions. ie. There were 6 cookies on the plate and we ate 4. How many are left? - learned about Hudson's favorite hobbies and his talent for building and wrote a message for Hudson's Star Student book. - listened and viewed stories about butterflies and farm animals - practiced jump rope skills in gym. If your child doesn't have a skipping rope at home, they are very inexpensive at the dollar store. Skipping is a great activity for developing coordination and cardiovascular fitness! Monday, June 3, 2019 2:15 to 3:15 p.m. Register here for your RSVP We began our week with a practice lockdown drill first thing on Tuesday morning. This was the Kindergarten students' first practice lockdown drill and they did very well staying quiet and calm. After the lockdown practice we discussed the reasons for lockdowns and the importance of staying quiet and calm. As this can be upsetting for some students, please talk to your child about the importance of lockdown practices and reassure him/her that we have to be prepared, so that we will be safe in the event of an unexpected situation. The whole school participated in an assembly presented by the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Rideau Park School is participating in the Jump Rope For Heart Fundraiser May 21-31, 2019. Jump Rope for Heart encourages kids to be active and help others by raising funds to support heart & stroke research. We will be fundraising May 21 – 31 with an initial fundraising goal of $1500. Students are learning skipping skills in PE and how to keep their heart and brain healthy. Giving back to our community is important to us, so all prizes earned will be donated to the Alberta Children's Hospital. A notice about the fundraiser was sent home in your child's folder. Donations can be made to the school or to a specific student) Also, this week at school the children: - were very excited to receive our caterpillars for our study of the life cycle of butterflies - learned about the characteristics of insects - identified and labelled the main body parts of a butterfly - practiced reading and printing the word of the week which was "and" - learned about the origin and meaning of Terran's name, his favorite toys and that he is learning to speak a second language. I was so proud of the children's wonderful performances and the confidence and courage they demonstrated performing in front of a large audience. This week at school the children:
- all read individually to me. Keep up the great work with home reading and practicing the sight words. The word of the week was "she". The children learned about the "sh" sound and the proper use of the pronoun "she". - listened and viewed several stories and videos about the "Life Cycle of Butterflies". Ask your child if he/she can remember the four stages of a butterfly (egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, butterfly) and what the change from a caterpillar to a butterfly is called. (metamorphosis). We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of our caterpillars next week, so that we will be able to observe first-hand the life cycle of butterflies. - the students learned about Isla's painting talent and her favorite hobbies. They wrote a special message for Isla's Star Student Book. Terran is the Star Student next week. Have a fabulous long weekend! - wrote about last week's swimming experience - participated in a drawing and painting session instructed by Teacher's Pet (you will see your child's creation this weekend) - learned about Jay's talents and favorite hobbies and wrote a special message for Jay's Star Student book. Jay chose Isla to be next week's Star Student - practiced and participated in a final rehearsal for next week's production of "Rideau in Revue" - read with their Grade 4 Buddies - listened and viewed several stories about "mothers" and shared how much they love their moms and appreciate everything their moms do for them! Their homework for the weekend is to be extra special sweet to their moms on Sunday and make sure that you all have a very Happy Mother's Day! Important Reminders/Dates: Please have your child continue to practice his/her sight words and complete daily home reading. I understand that everyone is busy with spring activities, but it is very important for your child to continue practicing and developing his/her literacy skills. The word of the week was "by". It was amazing to see how much the children's swimming skills progressed over the week. I can't thank the parent volunteers enough for all of their help this week! The students would not have had the opportunity to participate in the swimming program without the volunteers! Please see the information below for the volunteer tea. I hope that you will all be able to attend, so that we can show our sincere gratitude and appreciation for all that the volunteers do for our students and staff!
The next few weeks will be a very busy and important learning time. With outdoor activities and excitement for upcoming summer holidays, please try your best to make sure your child is getting plenty of rest. Over the past few months, each elementary class has been busy working on a scene/song for the school play during their Music class. We hope that all students can attend the evening performances on Tuesday, May 14th and Wednesday, May 15th. Each show starts at 6:30pm and students are to meet in their homerooms dressed in their costumes no later than 6:15pm. Kindergarten students are asked to wear Christmas outfits/colours (red, green, white and/or black). Tickets are on sale now (please go to Rideau Park’s website for the link to Eventbrite to purchase tickets). - viewed the presentation "Going Wild" by Brian Keating. Brian is a Calgary born environmentalist. He shared some of his adventures and his love for the planet earth. He stressed the importance of taking care of our earth. Please google him to read more about him. He is a very fascinating man! - listened, viewed and discussed "Earth Day" and various ways we can help keep our planet clean and safe - played "Race to 20", an addition and subtraction game. The children had to watch the signs (+ or -) carefully to move forward or backward - practiced reading and printing the word "on". Please have your child practice his/her words by making sentences with the words. ie. I love my mom and dad. etc. - learned about Tommy's favorite things to do and about his family. Tommy chose Jay to be the next star student for the week of May 6-10. This week at school the children: - welcomed a new student, Imani, who moved to Calgary all the way from Zimbabwe - practiced reading all of their sight words and checked that they had all of the words on their word rings. Please have your child keep his/her word ring in his/her folder, so he/she can use the word ring at school. The word for this week was "my". - learned how to solve subtraction equations to 10, using his/her fingers as a strategy to solve the problem. Please have your child practice addition and subtraction at home by asking him/her to solve math problems such as, "I had 5 pieces of broccoli and I ate 2. How many pieces of broccoli do I have left?/ I had 2 marbles and my friend gave me 2 marbles. How many marbles do I have now? - learned about Emmy's favorite things and listened to a book that was personalized for Emmy. Emmy chose Tommy to be next week's star student. - practiced their song (Up on the Housetop - Yes, they are singing a Christmas song in the school play) - decorated an Easter egg - ask your child to explain how he/she decorated the egg. (A very simple, clean way to decorate Easter eggs! You may want to do some more with your child for Easter! PLEASE CHECK IN YOUR CHILD'S LUNCH KIT FOR THE EASTER EGG! IT WILL BE VERY SMELLY IF YOU LEAVE IT IN THERE ALL WEEKEND!) Thank you very much to all of the parents who have volunteered to assist with the swimming program!
