I hope that you all had a very enjoyable and relaxing holiday. This week at school the children:
- shared and wrote about their winter holiday - practiced reading and printing the letter "Pp" , the word "play" and identifying words beginning with the letter Pp - used a number line to practice writing and comparing numbers 1-10. They played a game called "Guess My Number". This would be a great game to play with your child at home to develop mental math skills. Use the numbers 1-10 from a deck of playing cards (Substitute ace for 1). Your child chooses a card without looking at it and holds it on his/her forehead. They can only ask "Is my number greater than/less than or equal to ...." to guess their number, asking the least amount of questions as possible. - the children listened and viewed several stories about winter and how animals survive in winter. We discussed how animals adapt, migrate or hibernate in winter. We will be continuing our study of winter in January. - had a great deal of fun today, participating in a "Reindeer Balloon Race". This was one of the STEAM activities offered before the holidays and was so popular that it filled up before the Kindergarten students were able to choose their activities, so I promised them that they would have a chance to try it with their buddies. First, the children, with the assistance of their grade 4 buddy, blew up a balloon and decorated it as a reindeer. The balloons were just clipped off and not tied. We then taped the balloon to a straw which was strung threw a string that was tied at each end to chairs that were about ten feet apart. We unclipped and raced the balloons down the strings. The children learned that air is all around us even though we don't see it and that more air in the balloon caused it to travel with greater force and speed. Next week we will be starting our Star Student Program. The program celebrates each child’s uniqueness and specialness. Each Friday (or Thursday if Friday is a PD Day) a student will be selected to be the star student for the following week. I will post the student’s name in Friday’s blog and send a letter home in your child’s folder. (your child will probably remember to tell you as well.). Joe was chosen to be the first star student of the week. (names are randomly chosen from a bucket) The star student is able to share things about himself/herself each day for the week they are chosen. Please help your child select items that are special and meaningful to him/her such as: special gifts, a favourite book, a favourite toy, something they have made, pictures, videos that you can email to me, family artifacts, or demonstrating a special skill he/she is learning outside of the classroom. Several children in the classroom speak another language and it would be great for them to teach the other children some basic words and share about their culture. Could you also please tell your child how you decided on his/her name. ie. Was your child named after someone, does the name have a significant meaning or was it chosen because it was a favourite? Please help your child rehearse what they are going to share with the class. Please try to have your child’s sharing take five minutes or less. If your child would like to share something that takes longer, such as their favourite story for example, it could be done over two days. Important Reminders and Dates: January 14- Kindergarten Graduation Photos - It is recommended that your child wears a white collared shirt. Gowns will be provided. January 18 - Twin Day February 1 - Non-instructional day - No School |
