This week at school the children:
- began the BeakerHead Ingenuity Challenge - using only 8 rolls of masking tape the children will create what they think our city will look like in 1000 years from now. We brainstormed many of our ideas, talked about life in the past, present and future and got to work, rolling tape and beginning our designs! We have to submit our creation on Dec. 14. It will be very interesting to guide and observe the children through this process and see what the final product will be!! - practiced printing the letter "Kk", the word "look", and identifying words beginning with the "Kk" sound - listened, viewed and discussed the stories "What Do You Do With An Idea?", "What Do You Do With A Problem", and Rosie Revere, Engineer" that will help us with our design challenge - Ms. Kristen, the Occupational Therapist, taught a lesson to the students about the need for our own "personal space" to feel comfortable and safe - played indoor soccer in gym, practicing ball kicking skills and teamwork Important Dates and Reminders Nov. 23 - Professional Development Day - No School For Students Nov. 29 - Completing a clay project with Clay for Kids Dec. 7 - Professional Development Day - No School for Students Dec. 12 - Winter Concert - 6:30-7:15 p.m. More information to follow Dec. 21 - Pajama Day - Last day of classes before Winter Break It was wonderful to meet with all of you at conferences yesterday and today to reflect on your child's learning and set goals moving forward. Thank you for your support and participation in your child's education. This week at school the children: - practiced printing the letter "Jj" and identifying words beginning with the "Jj" sound - practiced printing and reading the word "the" - practiced counting and representing numbers 1-10 - played "Snakes and Ladders" to practice number recognition, one-to-one correspondence and subitize numbers on a dice (recognize at a glance without counting the dots) - performed exercises to promote core strength and balance facilitated by a physical therapist - learned about snowflakes (how they are formed, no two are alike and most are 6 sided) - viewed and listened to a story called "The Davy Rule" which was written based on the real life of an Albertan, "Frisbee Rob" and his dog Davy. Children learned the "Davy Rule"which is accepting others for who they are and treating others the way we expect to be treated. - viewed, listened and discussed a story called "The Bully" which stressed the importance of telling an adult if someone is bullying them (either physically or with hurtful words) and/or if they see someone else being bullied Next week the K-6 students will be starting the Beakerhead "Ingenuity Challenge", which is a class design project. The children will find out on Monday what the challenge is! The children: - practiced printing the letter "Ii" and identifying words beginning with the two "I" sounds. Ask your child if he/she can tell you what the vowel letters are and why they are vowels. - colored and cut a poppy wreath to display at the Remembrance Day Ceremony - participated in a whole body listening lesson provided by the Occupational Therapist, learning the skills to be an active listener - enjoyed participating in a variety of STEAM (science, technology,engineering, art and math) activities with the Gr. 1-6 students yesterday. Students were able to choose to make a friendship bracelet, a cardboard creation, a card for someone, a paper airplane, a lego creation, a calming tool, a hand sewing craft or learn how to code on the computer. The teachers and students felt this event was enjoyed so much by students that we are going to plan another STEAM day in December. - played "color tag" in gym and had a spider race. Thank you to Amy, Tommy's mom, for supplying the spiders and straws. We were going to have the race on Halloween Day but ran out of time. The children blew through a straw to move their spiders to the finish line. Congratulations to Ben who's spider won the race and to Hudson and Ethan who were close seconds! - listened and viewed a story called, "A Poppy is to Remember" and participated in conversations about the meaning of Remembrance Day - listened and viewed stories about being in charge of their actions, using a STOP, THINK & CHOOSE strategy to make safe choices - listened and viewed stories called "My Feelings Have Colours" and "My Magic Breath" that explained how we all have many different feelings and socially acceptable ways of expressing our feelings - participated in the school wide Remembrance Day Ceremony - Please ask your child what he/she learned from the ceremony. I was very proud of all the Kindergarten students for demonstrating such respectful audience behavior and active listening! Thank you very much for donations for the poppy fund. PLEASE NOTE THAT YOUR CHILD RECEIVED HIS/HER EYE (Early Years Evaluation) IN HIS/HER FOLDER TODAY. Please review the report and we will be discussing the results at parent-teacher conferences next week. Thank you very much for providing the wonderful treats and attending the Halloween Celebration. The children were really excited to have their parents/grandparents and siblings join in the celebration. A special thank-you to Amy Goos for coordinating all of the snacks and providing some classroom games for the children.
This week at school the children: - practiced printing the letter "Hh" and the word "he" - identified words beginning with the "Hh" sound - cut, glued and sequenced picture cards to describe the life cycle of a pumpkin - practiced using basic shapes to draw a picture of themselves and their costumes on Halloween - played literacy and numeracy games on the computer with their grade 4 buddies - listened and viewed several Halloween and pumpkin themed stories and a story called, "I Call My Hands Gentle", in which we examined all of the wonderful things that can be created and done with our hands. We discussed how our brains control how we choose to use our hands. The students all made a promise to use gentle hands and then asked friends if they could use their hands to give them a high five, knuckles and/or a hug. I hope the children will continue this practice to foster positive interactions between one another. Next Thursday, is National STEAM DAY(science, technology, engineering, art and math)and the Kindergarten students will be participating in STEAM activities with the Gr.1-6 students. The students were able to choose the activity they wished to participate in. (making a friendship bracelet, cardboard creations, paper airplanes, coding, making calming tools and sewing) Next week we will be discussing Remembrance Day and the Kindergarten students will be attending the Remembrance Day Ceremony on Friday, Nov. 9 from 10:30-11:30. This can be a sensitive topic for some children. Please let me know if you would prefer that your child not attend the ceremony and be picked up early. Donations for the poppy fund would be greatly appreciated. Students will all receive a poppy sticker. November Dates & Reminders: Nov. 5 -9 Jacket Racket - The grade one students are looking for donations of gently used (or new) winter coats, fleece jackets, snow pants, and other winter gear of all sizes (baby to adult).
